David Putnam is a managing director in the Hong Kong office and co-leads the Asia Restructuring and Disputes practices with Bruno Arboit. David has over 20 years of restructuring and investment banking experience in the region, both as an advisor and a principal. He has advised on transactions in most Asian countries from Mongolia to Indonesia. Throughout his career he has been involved in highly complex cross-border distress situations involving Asian companies.

Prior to joining Duff & Phelps, David established and ran Houlihan Lokey’s Asia business having been recruited from Citi where he spent 10 years as an investment banker. He has acted for both companies and creditors in restructurings as well as buyers of distressed assets, both in Asia and globally, executing landmark transactions such as the SinoForest restructuring and the Section 363 acquisition of Global Crossing’s Asian assets out of Chapter 11 by China Netcom. He has also executed multiple highly complex corporate transactions including the purchase of Bank Islam in Malaysia by Dubai Investment Group, simultaneous delisting of Jilin Petrochemical from the U.S., Chinese and Hong Kong stock exchanges and a series of connected acquisitions/divestments reorganizing the state-owned telecoms sector in Indonesia.

David also has significant C-suite experience having served as interim CEO of a distressed ASX-listed Indonesian mining company and CFO of a global fintech/blockchain startup. He has also advised on valuation and fairness opinions for U.S. going-private transactions. David first came to Asia as a student studying Chinese in Beijing. His professional career began as a diplomat with the British Embassy in Beijing. David speaks, reads and writes Mandarin Chinese and Bahasa Indonesia.
